EMVCo to develop 3DS 2.0 spec for card-not-present payments

An enhanced EMV 3DS 2.0 specification will support additional data available during the transaction to enable more intelligent risk-based decisioning.

The global technical body, EMVCo, will broaden its scope to include the next generation of 3D Secure in order to support new and emerging remote payment technologies, according to a news release from the organization.

The online authentication protocol was originally developed by Visa to enable authentication between cardholder and issuer in PC-based shopping transactions. But in the years since 3DS was commercialized, smartphones and mobile applications have changed how consumers make purchases and payments.

An enhanced EMV 3DS 2.0 specification will support additional data available during the transaction to enable more intelligent risk-based decisioning, EMVCo said. The specification will also support non-payment user identification and verification.

"3DS 2.0 complements EMVCo's work to facilitate the worldwide interoperability and acceptance of secure payment transactions," said EMVCo Board of Managers Chair Sean Conroy. "Our goal as a global technical body is to define the specifications in conjunction with the payments community and to establish a reliable, international framework to enable digital commerce to achieve its full potential without compromising security.

EMVCo will work with industry stakeholders throughout 2015 on the advanced specification and invites interested parties to engage in the process through its EMVCo Associates Program. EMVCo said it expects that the EMV 3DS 2.0 specification will be published and ready for market deployment in 2016.

Visa will maintain its ownership of the 3DS version 1.0 specifications. The 3DS 2.0 specification will be operated by EMVCo separate from and parallel with v1.0, which Visa plans to phase out once 3DS 2.0 reaches maturity.
