Discover to pilot NFC program in Chicago, Salt Lake City

NFC Times is reporting that Discover Financial Services will pilot a contactless payment method for iPhones using an NFC-enabled attachment preloaded with the application. Canadian Wireless Dynamics will provide the attachments.

The pilot will use 400 to 500 of Discover's own employees as guinea pigs to test the method in Chicago and Salt Lake City, the post said.

Troy Bernard, Discover's director of chip payment technology, told the NFC Times that the likelihood of a large portion of mobile payment users will eventually have iPhones necessitates a solution that can be used with the devices.

"The iPhone is still a huge constituent of the market," Bernard said in the post. "A good number of your cardholders are going to be iPhone users. As a network, I need a certified (iPhone) option."
