CVS is the latest retailer from the Merchant Customer Exchange to launch its own mobile payment solution.Today, the pharmacy chain announced CVS Pay.

A CVS spokeswoman confirmed to Mobile Payments Today that CVS Pay does not use the same QR code technology as CurrentC, the now-defunct mobile app from MCX. Instead, CVS Pay uses barcode technology similar to Starbucks.

"Over the past year, our digital team has brought to market numerous new digital tools — like CVS Pay — that make shopping at CVS Pharmacy easier and more convenient," said Brian Tilzer, senior vice president and chief digital officer for CVS Health. "We've been excited by the level of customer adoption of these digital solutions, and we will continue our quick pace of innovation and deployment to make our customers' health care experience even easier."

Consumers can find Android and iOS versions of CVS Pay within the pharmacy's mobile app. In addition to payment, the redesigned app allows users to manage prescriptions and link their ExtraCare loyalty card with CVS Pay. 

CVS Pay is currently available in select markets, including New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware. A nationwide rollout is expected to kick off later this year.

The customer can link any credit or debit card to CVS Pay through the CVS Pharmacy app. To check out using CVS Pay, the customer pulls up the barcode in the app (or, if using the drive-through, they'll share their pickup number). The store associate scans the barcode, rings up the purchases, lets the customer choose a payment method from the app, and then processes the payment.

All verifications for prescriptions and payment — such as name and birthdate, signature and PIN — take place directly in the app, so transactions are hassle-free. Once complete, the customer receives confirmation of payment in the app.
