Contactless payments dominate London transit

Since July 2015, commuters have used mobile devices to pay for more than 3.2 million journeys.

Londoners and visitors to the city apparently love to pay their transit fares via contactless, as Transport for London revealed last week that riders paid for their trips last year using the technology more than 300 million times across credit, debit and smartphones.

Contactless payments have been accepted on London buses since December 2012, with the technology expanded to cover the Tube, tram, DLR, London Overground, and most National Rail services in London in September 2014.

Since July 2015, commuters have used mobile devices to pay for more than 3.2 million journeys.

"We are committed to making paying for transport easier for everyone and are working to further expand the benefits to journeys to all London airports as well as other key locations around the commuter belt," Shashi Verma, director of customer experience for Transport for London, said in a statement.

In the coming year, Transport for London said it will continue to make improvements to the Oyster and contactless payment system to further provide the best service to customers and enable it to take further steps towards eliminating the use of paper tickets on the Tube.
