Consumers are spending less, Bank of America finds

Bank of America looked at over 40 million active credit and debit card accounts in its system in June and found some surprising statistics. It seems that consumer purchases are decreasing in price but increasing in frequency.

"Consumers continue to rely on their cards for smaller transactions, causing the average purchase amount per active account to decrease or stay flat across all three payment methods," the report said.

In year over year comparisons, mobile wallet transactions increased by 130 percent, the average mobile wallet purchase amount decreased by 12 percent, online transactions increased by 25 percent and the average online purchase amount decreased by 9 percent. However, "[p]oint of sale remains the top way to transact, representing 85 percent of all purchases," the report said.

Meanwhile at the airport, the bank found that "[w]hile gasoline prices brought down flight costs, consumers made more transactions to cover smaller fees, including baggage and expedited boarding." Airline transactions increased by 7 percent, but the cost fell to a negative 6 percent in a year over year comparison.

The box office may have found Dory, but theaters did not find the previous year's success. "An animated fish couldn't compete against last June's record-setting summer blockbusters, as movie theaters' spend and transactions declined," the bank said. Movie-goers' spending and transaction both fell by 9 percent.

Finally, wholesale stores saw some growth upon accepting new credit cards. Per transaction, consumers spend $39 at mass-market grocery stores, $41 at high-end grocery stores and $106 at wholesale clubs. According to the report, wholesale stores represent 15 percent of total grocery purchases, up one percent from May 2016.
