Co-op digital wallet to provide pay-anyone payments and global mobile access

Co-op Financial Services has introduced a new version of its Sprig digital wallet platform with new services from its long-standing business partner, Jacksonville, Fla.-based processor FIS.

Co-op provides services including shared branches and call centers, ATMs and card processing for credit unions throughout the U.S.

Starting in 2014, credit union members who use Sprig will be able to make out-of-network, pay-anyone payments to accounts beyond Co-op Connect, Co-op said in a press release. Co-op Connect is the infrastructure that enables both Co-op shared branching and Sprig by Co-op.

The upgraded Sprig by Co-op features a redesigned Web and mobile app user interface and supports remote deposit capture via Android mobile devices in addition to the Apple iPhone, which it already supports.

"We will be adding partners and features to Sprig by Co-op throughout 2014," Stan Hollen, president and CEO of Co-op Financial Services, said in a news release. "In partnership with FIS, we expect to add global mobile access, allowing global ATM access through a digital wallet application."

Hollen said Co-op plans to add point-of-sale payments capabilities for Sprig. He sees interesting opportunities for Co-op through Merchant Customer Exchange, the merchant-operated mobile wallet coalition that has chosen FIS for its payments delivery engine. MCX represents 60 percent of bricks-and-mortar merchant sales.

Using Sprig by Co-op, credit union members transfer money from their deposit accounts based on the real-time Good Funds availability model for most transactions, rather than the delayed automated clearing house model. Members can make instantaneous transfers between their accounts, as well as immediately verify that funds are available in a recipient’s destination account.
