Mobile banking is becoming an equalizer, with small and regional banks now able to offer sophisticated services via mobile device.

Take Citizens & Farmers Bank, for example. The FI, which has only 18 branches in the Richmond and Hampton Roads areas of Virginia, has announced that it will support remote deposit capture, allowing its customers to deposit checks directly into their bank accounts by snapping a pic of the document using a smartphone's embedded camera.

The bank is also offering a full suite of mobile banking tools so customers can view account balances and recent transactions, transfer funds and pay bills.

"Mobile banking with remote deposit is no longer an exclusive product from large national or regional banks," said Rodney Overby, SVP and chief information officer at C&F Bank. "At C&F Bank, we recognize that smartphone usage and mobile banking is continuing to skyrocket. We have made it our goal to offer products that fall in line with this kind of technology shift and tailor our products to how our customers are utilizing them."
