Belgium’s Argenta bank shuts down 143 ATMs due to cyberattack

Belgium's Argenta bank was targeted by cybercriminals who launched a jackpotting attack on 143 ATMs this past weekend, forcing the bank to close down the machines temporarily, according to a report in The Brussels Times.

Jackpotting got its name due to the way an ATM, once infected with malware either through online hacking or by physically installing it via a USB, mimics a slot machine by releasing all its cash at once.

The jackpotting attacks focused on older ATM models that Argenta had scheduled for replacement, according to the report.

"We note that despite the upgrades that have been carried out, this type of device remains in the cross-hairs of criminals," Christine Vermylen, a bank spokesperson, told the news outlet. "That is why we have decided to shut down 143 devices of this type now, pending the installation of new devices later this year. We are looking into whether that operation can be speeded up."

Jackpotting has been an issue for banks in Europe and Asia for the past several years, and in 2018, the cybercrime was discovered in the U.S. Investigators are still searching for suspects.
