B of A expands NFC mobile payment trial

According to reports, Bank of America is set to expand its trials of an NFC payment application. American Banker reports the trial will be in New York, Atlanta and San Francisco starting in late March and lasting for three months.

Tech website BGR.com first reported on the trial last Friday after a source forwarded official e-mails from B of A inviting customers to take part in the trial. According to the e-mails, the program will allow customers with BlackBerry smartphones to use their devices as a contactless payment method at the point of sale through near field communications(NFC) technology.

To be selected for the trial, customers must not only have a BlackBerry device, but also a B of A-issued MasterCard credit or Visa debit card. Participants in the trial will receive a new battery cover for their BlackBerry phones containing an NFC antenna as well as a microSD card to install in the device.

B of A did not disclose how many participants will be included in the trial. Though the trial is only available to BlackBerry users at this time, B of A did reveal to American Banker the plan is for iPhones to be included in the trial eventually.
