Apple to add Clemson, Georgetown, other schools to contactless ID program

Apple said it is expanding the number of participants in its contactless student ID program for iPhone and Apple Watch, with another 100,000 university students scheduled to join from several schools, including Georgetown University, Clemson University, the University of Kentucky and the University of San Francisco.

Apple launched the student ID program in 2018, providing students a digital tool that can be used for everything from a digital key for accessing school dorms to making payment at a campus dining hall.

"We're happy to add to the growing number of schools that are making getting around campus easier than ever with iPhone and Apple Watch," Jennifer Bailey, vice president of internet services at Apple, said in a company release.

She said that since the program launched, students have purchased more than 1.25 million meals and opened more than 4 million doors on campuses. A number of major schools have already been using the contactless ID program, including Duke University, Johns Hopkins University and the University of Alabama.

Apple said it is adding support for Cbord Group, Allegion plc and HID Global, which are leading providers of campus credentials and secure mobile access.
