Apple readies NFC tag reading in iOS update

Apple has announced that iOS 11 will bring the ability for iPhones to read NFC tags for the first time. 

The new update, which drops September 19, will be available to owners of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus in addition to the new iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, according to Apple at its Sept. 12 technology event.

The ability to read NFC tags is the first time the technology will be used for something other than Apple Pay.
