Apple advertises for payments software engineer
The payments world has long wondered if, when and how Apple will jump into the space in a definitive way. Now there's one more tidbit to fuel speculation. According to 9to5Mac.com, Apple has posted a job listing on its website for a Payments Software Engineer "that will help build a next generation payment platform."
According to the site, Apple said the system will consist of integration of payment devices, middleware and acquirers that will "push the boundaries in new markets for Apple Retail."
The site notes that Apple currently uses a custom housing for the iPod touch with third-party hardware to process payments in its retail stores. And 9to5Mac recently reported that Apple is rolling out its new Bluetooth-powered iBeacons technology in U.S. retail stores.
But it remains to be seen whether Apple will roll out its own payment system to compete with NFC-enabled systems.
