The North American merchant processor Moneris Solutions Corp. is to use mPOS technology from AnywhereCommerce to enable select merchant clients to accept credit, debit and gift card payments on smartphones and tablets.

As part of the agreement, Montreal, Canada-based AnywhereCommerce will supply Moneris with its audio-jack attachable wireless appliances. AnywhereCommerce said its appliances use encryption technology to enable smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices to function as secure mPOS terminals. The appliances support magnetic-stripe debit, credit and gift card payments as well as EMV chip-and-PIN card transactions, the company said.

Jointly owned by BMO Bank of Montreal and RBC Royal Bank of Canada, Moneris has 350,000 merchant clients in the U.S. and Canada.

"The relationship (with AnywhereCommerce) expands our mobile processing product offering and enables us to offer an additional choice to our m-commerce customers," Chris Lee, president, North American Strategic Partnerships and Emerging Markets, Moneris, said in a news release.
