Amazon Go promises no checkout, no lines, no waiting

Come 2017 Amazon aims to debut a no-waiting, no-line, no-checkout grocery store experience, called 'Just Walk Out', at its Amazon Go store in Washington state.

The strategy, according to a web site about the new retail approach, is shopping without checkout.

"Our checkout-free shopping experience is made possible by the same types of technologies used in self-driving cars: computer vision, sensor fusion, and deep learning. Our Just Walk Out technology automatically detects when products are taken from or returned to the shelves and keeps track of them in a virtual cart. When you're done shopping, you can just leave the store. Shortly after, we'll charge your Amazon account and send you a receipt," explains the web site.

Currently the Amazon Go storefront, which is about 1,800 square feet on 7th Avenue in Seattle, is open to Amazon employees in a beta pilot. Customers need an Amazon account, a supported smartphone and the Amazon Go app to shop. The store offers everything from breakfast to dinner options, on-site chefs, grocery essentials as well as Amazon Meal Kits.
