Aldi Nord moves German in-store payments to Fiserv amid Wirecard crisis

Fiserv Inc. said that Aldi Nord has moved all of its in-store card payments in Germany to the company.

Aldi Nord made the decision in late June to move the in-store acquiring business, which means Fiserv now handles processing for 2,250 Aldi Nord locations in Germany through its TeleCash from First Data GmBH business. The move follows the insolvency filings of Wirecard AG, which had signed an agreement in July 2019 to handle payment processing for the supermarket chain.

"Since July 1st, all card payments at Aldi Nord have been handled by Fiserv Inc.," Axel von Schemm, a spokesman for Aldi Nord, told Mobile Payments Today via email. "Since then, the cooperation with Wirecard Bank has been limited to business with the Aldi gift card."

According to Fiserv, Aldi Nord has been a client for 15 years, leveraging network service provider services for routing and switching payment services. In November Fiserv announced that it had been selected to handle the global launch of Aldi Nord and Aldi SUD's online ordering business for Aldi liefert home delivery.

The Financial Times reported last week that Fiserv was one of several companies in the running for Wirecard North America's business.

A spokesperson for Fiserv said the company does not comment on speculation related to its business.
