After UK rollout, Sony and Boku will introduce carrier billing in US

Months after reaching a deal to let U.K. consumers buy content on Sony devices, Sony and Boku will bring the arrangement to the United States. The deal to tap Boku's direct carrier billing technology will let users top up their account wallet to purchase content on consoles such as the PS3 through the Playstation Store and across the SonyEntertainment Network, the companies said.

The arrangement includes the purchase of downloadable games, add-ons, themes, movies and TV shows and subscriptions to the Music Unlimited service, and subscribers to select U.S. mobile network operators will be able to access the payment method.

The process occurs in three steps: Customers choose "mobile" as the payment option, enter their mobile phone number and respond via SMS to confirm the wallet top-up. The charge will appear on their next mobile phone bill, or is debited against their pre-paid account.

"Offering customers the best entertainment content across the PlayStation Store and Sony Entertainment Network is our top priority," Eric Lempel, vice president, Sony Network Entertainment International, said in a news release. "Mobile billing is another secure and convenient way for users to fund their wallet for immediate access to the content they want."
