After delays, South African bank launches mPOS solution

The South African banking group Absa is about to take its mobile point-of-sale device to market with pre-selected merchants, according to Business Tech. The bank initially planned to launch the product to small and mobile businesses earlier this year but ran into delays in bringing its South African-built product up to international standards, the site said.

The mPOS system, dubbed the Payment Pebble, lets merchants accept debit and credit cards through a dongle plugged into a smartphone.

Nedbank launched its PocketPOS solution in February and claims to be the first South African bank with an mPOS system in use, the site said. Another South African bank, FNB, is not saying when it will launch into the mPOS market.
