$1.3M in funding to social, mobile, payment startup Chirpify

The convergence of social media, mobile devices and payments has yielded a nice payday for start-up Chirpify. The company, billing itself as a "Twitter Commerce Platform," announced it has received $1.3 million in Series A financing from investors that include Voyager Capital, BuddyTV CEO Andy Liu and HootSuite CEO Ryan Holmes.

"Twitter is a tremendous platform for brands, retailers, politicians, musicians and others to engage fans, yet with more than 140 million users there's still no way to directly exchange goods and currency," said HootSuite CEO Ryan Holmes in the announcement. "Chirpify provides a unique approach to fill this void by processing transactions without ever having to leave Twitter."

Chirpify also announced it is launching a new Twitter Commerce for Digital Content platform that lets musicians sell their digital content like songs and concert tickets via Twitter. Chirpify said the platform "provides a simple way to turn tweets into transactions."

"Chirpify now makes it possible to sell digital content in-stream on Twitter, enabling musicians and artists to sell direct to their fans and control their own distribution," said Chirpify CEO and Founder Chris Teso. "People already use Twitter to follow the brands, musicians and others they care about, so why can't they get the latest product or hot new song right through Twitter? Now they can."

To use the platform, artists upload digital content to their Chirpify dashboard and click to tweet. Consumers use Chirpify to connect their Twitter and PayPal accounts. When the accounts are linked, a reply to the original tweet sends a Twitter direct message or email that prompts the user to download the digital content. The user can then download the content to any device.

Chirpify said the new service helps users monetize social media and gives anyone the ability to buy, sell, donate or pay someone. The company said that because it works anywhere Twitter works, any user on any mobile device, tablet or computer can use the service. The platform also integrates with existing e-commerce storefronts like Magento for back-end fulfillment, listing and transaction management, Chirpify said.

Chirpify is based in Portland, Oregon.
