Westpac in Google Glass and iBeacon trials

Westpac wants to give its customers in Australia and New Zealand access to their bank accounts via Google Glass and other wearable devices, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.

"We are currently trialling a version of the St. George MoneyMeter app on both smart watches and Google Glass (for the St. George brand)," Harry Wendt, Westpac's general manager of digital, told the Herald. "We are also trialling the branch and ATM locator on smart watches for the Westpac brand. Our intention is to test and learn and then use what we have learnt to introduce it into our other brands."

Westpac New Zealand is integrating its balance checking app, Cash Tank, into Google Glass. "By the end of this year, our customers will be able to walk into a shop wearing their Google Glasses, see something they like and instantly check their bank balance, which will be displayed in their peripheral vision," Westpac NZ 's chief digital officer Simon Pomeroy told the newspaper. "That's pretty cool."

Eventually, customers would be able to make transfers between their bank accounts, receive account alerts and find the nearest ATM or Westpac branch using Google Glass, Pomeroy said.

Westpac also plans to deploy Apple's iBeacon Bluetooth Low Energy technology in some bank branches. The technology will be used to transmit special offers to customers' phones as they pass branches.
