Vocalink hopes to Zapp Apple Pay

Zapp is intended to provide real-time payments between consumers and merchants — both online and at the point of sale.

A day after Apple announced Apple Pay will debut in the U.K. next month, Vocalink Tuesday announced it will launch its long-awaited mobile-payments system this fall, according to multiple media reports.

Zapp is intended to provide real-time payments between consumers and merchants — both online and at the point of sale — without the need for a digital wallet. Zapp will generate digital tokens that will hide customer bank account details from merchants, and it is intended to work with different technologies such as NFC, Bluetooth, QR codes and PIN-entry point-of-sale terminals.

Vocalink said it will introduce NFC payments shortly after the launch.

HSBC, First Direct, Nationwide, Santander, which are all Apple Pay supporters, will support Zapp at launch. Metro Bank will also support the system.

Vocalink Tuesday unveiled a Pay by Bank app logo, which will let consumers know they can use the service to make a payment.
