Verifone announces multiple mPOS initiatives for retailers

Company also puts emphasis on contactless and EMV acceptance.

Verifone made three announcements this week at the National Retail Federation's annual Big Show trade conference that focus on the mobile point-of-sale market, EMV and mobile payments.

The company announced in a press release that Delhaize America has selected Verifone’s multimedia, EMV and NFC-capable MX 925 payment terminals to enhance consumer engagement at the point of sale across all of Delhaize America’s U.S. locations. Delhaize America is among the Top 25 U.S. retailers according to the National Retail Federation, and is one of the country’s largest food retailers. The company operates more than 1,200 Food Lion and Hannaford stores across the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions of the U.S.

Verifone also announced the PAYware Mobile e355, the newest mPOS terminal in the Verifone mobile suite of products. It is intended to free merchants from consumer technology upgrade cycles and it adapts to multiple OS options, according to the announcement. It is a flexible, long-lasting device that can accommodate different form factors and outlive smartphone and tablet models. This enables merchants to make long-term investments in mPOS, at a much lower cost of ownership. Furthermore, it supports all of the major OS options, including Android, iOS and Windows.

"The prospect of having to purchase new mPOS devices for sales associates when smartphones and tablets are upgraded has been a major inhibitor to mPOS investment among retailers," said Mark Shockley, senior vice president of mobile solutions for Verifone. "Verifone’s single, modular solution will offer the ultimate in mPOS flexibility, allowing it to persist across changes in devices, even if somebody wants to make a complete switch from one OS to another."

The PAYware Mobile e355 accepts all payment types, including EMV, NFC, Apple Pay, and traditional magnetic stripe; features an optional bar code scanner; and supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and USB connectivity. It will be available in late summer 2015.

Verifone and Samsung announced a global partnership that will deliver advanced, Android-based mobile point of sale products to multi-lane and enterprise retailers.

The initial offering, which will be introduced later this year, will feature:

  • a ruggedized Samsung Galaxy Tab Active tablet with 8-inch screen for comfortable viewing;
  • enhanced security with Verifone’s point-to-point encryption of payment data coupled with Samsung’s Knox mobile device security (available with a separate licensing fee);
  • ease of use with multiple connectivity options, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and USB; transactions can be conducted using one hand at the counter, in the aisle, or in any environment;
  • acceptance of all payment types, including EMV, NFC, beacons and traditional magnetic stripe; and
  • commerce enablement capabilities provided by Verifone’s Commerce Enablement platform, which allows retailers to deliver value-added services, targeted marketing and advertising content from anywhere inside or outside the store.

"Samsung is focused on delivering solutions that enable retailers to succeed in an amplified economy and provide shoppers the kind of experience they have come to expect in today’s mobile world," said Youngho Son, vice president of the enterprise business team at Samsung Electronics. "Mobile point of sale is an important part of this, and by partnering with Verifone, we will be able to provide leading retailers a secure, flexible and easy-to-integrate solution that leverages our enterprise-ready Galaxy tablets."
