Two UK banks add Apple Touch ID

RBS and NatWest have become the first financial institutions in the region to add fingerprint sensor functionality to their mobile banking apps.

RBS and NatWest this week have become the first U.K. financial institutions to add Apple's Touch ID fingerprint sensor functionality to their mobile banking apps, according to a press release.

RBS and NatWest said they introduced Touch ID following feedback from their customers, who took to the banks’ online community forum ‘Ideas Bank’ to ask for the latest technology in the mobile banking app. The iPhone 5S, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus smartphones feature the technology, which allows users to log in to apps or confirm a payment by means of a fingerprint.

“There has been a revolution in banking, as more and more of our customers are using digital technology to bank with us," said Stuart Haire, managing director of RBS and NatWest Direct Bank. "Adding Touch ID to our mobile banking app makes it even easier and more convenient for customers to manage their finances on the move, and directly responds to their requests."
