Taxi software firm adds mobile payments app

Fleet management software firm T Dispatch will offer a mobile card payment app that uses a back-end payment processing system from London, U.K.-based Judo Payments.

T Dispatch offers a cloud-based dispatch system for taxi, private hire and passenger transport fleets worldwide, including smartphone apps for drivers and dispatch customer relationship management. The U.K.-based firm currently supports more than 1,500 fleet customers worldwide, including taxi app start-ups Cabbie and Hailo, and plans to expand its operations to South America in 2014.

With Judo's mobile payments processing technology, T Dispatch will be able to offer an app to fleet customers that will enable them to accept mobile payments from consumers who book taxis on their smartphones.

"Taxi fleets depend on our technology to run their daily operations, and it's crucial that we deliver the best possible solution to our customers," Bryony Cooper, T Dispatch CEO, said in a news release. "This includes providing them with a consumer app that can easily accept card payments, so that vehicles can be booked and paid for straight from the app."

Cooper expects to see a rise in consumers using T Dispatch's payments app and offering fleet owners customer loyalty to their brand.

Judo said its ready-to-install back-end payment processing system takes the hassle out of creating a solution from scratch, allowing developers to focus more time producing quality apps.

In a blog posting, Yankee Group analyst Jordan McKee said taxi transportation presents a great use case for mobile payments. "Removing payments from the conversation when attempting to get from point A to point B provides considerable value in the form of convenience to the end user," he writes. "When payment becomes an invisible component of the journey and the emphasis is on the overall experience, satisfaction results. We expect this to be a significant trend moving into 2014."
