Stripe pegs value at $5 billion after latest funding round

The company also announced a partnership with Visa to work on digital payments.

Stripe, the e-commerce startup, Tuesday announced that it raised less than $100 million in a new funding round to put the company's valuation at $5 billion. The company, which was founded by a pair of brothers in 2009, was worth $3.5 billion in December.

Stripe's recent focus has been on mobile commerce, as it was named an initial Apple Pay partner. The company is also behind Twitter Buy Button and is working with Alibaba's payment division, Alipay.

Stripe's new funding round comes from Visa, American Express and Sequoia Capital, among others. The company also announced a partnership with Visa in an effort to improve digital transactions and work on things such as security and software initiatives such as buy buttons.
