Sberbank Kazakhstan, OpenWay intro cardless cash at ATMs

The solution allows customers to set up a withdrawal online and complete it at any one of the bank's 900 ATMs.

Sberbank Kazakhstan and Belgium-based OpenWay, a provider of payments software, have rolled out an ATM service that enables bank customers to withdraw cash at more than 900 ATMs without a bankcard.

"Cash by Code" functionality was developed by OpenWay together with a third-party integration company and implemented on the Way4 payment platform, according to a press release.

The Sberbank cardless cash withdrawal is scheduled via Sberbank Online. Using the online system, customers specify the withdrawal amount and their mobile phone number. The system then generates a two-part code: The first part is delivered to the customer via Sberbank Online; the second part is sent to the customer's mobile phone as an SMS message.

To withdraw the funds, the customer enters both parts of the code and the withdrawal amount at any Sberbank ATM. For added security, codes are valid for only 24 hours. Funds not collected during this period are returned to the sender's account. Customers can withdraw amounts ranging from 1,000 to 100,000 tenge ($3 to $3,000).

"Cash by Code gives our customers hassle-free access to their funds, even if they lose their card or forget it at home," said Andrei Timchenko, Deputy CEO of retail at Sberbank Kazakhstan. "We really focus on optimizing retail banking processes — and developing and implementing innovative IT solutions plays a key role in this."

In addition to Kazakhstan, the Way4 Cash By Code solution has been successfully rolled out in countries in Africa, Asia and other parts of Southeast Europe.
