Rogers adds devices to lineup of suretap-ready phones

Canadian carrier Rogers Communications is expanding the range of phone choices for its suretap mobile payment service. New devices announced today include handsets from LG and Samsung running on the Android mobile operating system, as well as some new BlackBerry devices.

Launched last November, suretap is an NFC-based mobile wallet that allows users to tap their phones to pay at the point of sale. When it was launched, only select Blackberry devices were able to use the mobile wallet. With today's announcement, users of three Android devices from LG and Samsung, as well as four BlackBerry devices, can now use suretap.

"To continue driving adoption and growth of mobile payments in Canada, it is essential that a strong ecosystem is established to include multiple devices, operating systems and payment networks," said Jeppe Dorff, vice president of transaction services at Rogers. "We know our customers have strong affinity to the Android platform and we are thrilled to include Android devices amongst smartphones ready to support mobile payment applications built for suretap."

Rogers said that "tens of thousands" of Canadians have signed up to use suretap since it rolled out in November.
