PayPal launches mobile payments in 50 Toronto locations

Consumers in Toronto now can use their PayPal mobile app to pay for food and drinks at 50 bars, restaurants and food trucks throughout the city, according to a report in the Toronto Star.

PayPal app users in Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States already have the ability to pay for goods and services without cash or payment cards. Users check into an establishment on the app, place an order on their smartphone and pay by swiping the phone's screen. Cashiers confirm the purchase when they see a user's picture on a compatible mobile point-of-sale terminal.

Canadian establishments accepting PayPal use TouchBistro's iPad POS technology, according to the Star.

"We chose restaurants to start off, because these are often places that people want to quickly get in and out of, so an easy, fast way to pay is beneficial for both consumers and the business," Kerry Reynolds, head of consumer marketing for PayPal Canada, told the Toronto Star. "One of the best things about it is that it doesn't matter the device you use, and this really is about getting people to start using their phone as their digital wallet."
