Partners debut secure ATM-based card loading for mobile wallet

Xpression SafeLoad uses 'inherently secure' ATM network architecture to ensure fraud-free onboarding of payment cards to a mobile wallet.

Diebold Inc. and SimplyTapp, a mobile NFC payment and host card emulation technology company, have partnered to connect the digital and physical worlds of cash with a secure, white label mobile wallet offering, according to a press release.

Xpression SafeLoad, a Diebold mobile cash access solution, uses the inherently secure architecture of the ATM network to onboard the accountholder's card data via card present, PIN-secured technology, the company says.

Unlike mobile wallets that allow consumers to upload a card by taking a picture of it or manually entering the card number, Diebold's patent-pending process requires the accountholder to insert the card into the ATM card reader and authenticate it via PIN entry.

Once the customer's card is authenticated, the ATM displays a message offering to enroll the customer in the issuer's mobile wallet.

Customers who choose this option are prompted to enter their mobile number on the PIN pad in order to receive a text message with a link to download the mobile app.

Card data is securely tokenized and transferred from the ATM to the card issuer's secure cloud via the SimplyTapp HCE solution. The customer can immediately begin using the phone's NFC tap-to-pay functionality at any ATM or POS device that accepts contactless payments, the release said.

According to the release, this white-label offering allows FIs to securely promote mobile integration, and empowers them to remain competitive by offering an exclusive solution in the growing payments space.

"SimplyTapp believes extending consumer relationships through mobile devices is critical to the future of banking," said company co-founder and CEO Doug Yeager. "[W]ith Diebold's secure self-service technology and our leading cloud token solution, the need for highly secure authentication and card onboarding can now be fully realized at the convenience and familiarity of a bank's ATM."

The technology is in live pilots with customers, including  America First Credit Union of Salt Lake City, Utah. "We have been waiting for a mobile payment solution that also incorporates cardless access at the ATM in a way that supports and extends our brand to manage card onboarding more effectively," said Brice Mindrum, head of mobile services at America First.

"This type of solution positions us to support our existing customers while enabling us to explore additional value-added services for unbanked and underbanked consumers," said Rachid Molinary, vice president of digital strategy for Puerto Rico-based Banco Popular.

Diebold will showcase Xpression SafeLoad at Money 20/20, Oct. 26-28, in Las Vegas. Pending completion of successful customer pilots, the solution will be commercialized for market in early 2016.
