Overstock.com partners with Coinbase for Bitcoin acceptance

The online discount retailer Overstock.com has partnered with Bitcoin wallet provider Coinbase to add Bitcoins to the range of payment options available on its website.

Coinbase, which said it has 19,000 business customers, allows merchants to accept customers' Bitcoins as payment for goods and to exchange them immediately into dollars, so that they have no volatility risks.

Merchants who accept Bitcoins as payments benefit from not having to pay credit card transaction fees.

The partnership with Overstock.com represents the largest Bitcoin merchant implementation to date, Coinbase said in a blog post. Other merchants accepting Bitcoins via Coinbase include OKCupid, Reddit and Khan Academy.

Coinbase recently launched a point-of-sale app enabling merchants to accept Bitcoin payments in-person on a mobile device.
