Mobile is big for Alibaba's record-breaking Singles' Day sales

Consumers bought $14.3 billion in goods on the holiday, which is up 60 percent from last year.

Some 68 percent of Alibaba's sales during its Singles' Day shopping festival this past week came through mobile devices, the Chinese-based e-commerce site announced Thursday.

Consumers bought $14.3 billion in goods on the holiday, which is up 60 percent from last year.

Singles' Day was originally meant as mock celebration in China for people not in relationships, but the holiday has turned into a shopping bonanza bigger than both Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Alibaba made it into a shopping event in 2009.

The company said it received a boost in overall sales this year because it added transactions from its affiliates, including Suning Commerce Group, which controls a 20 percent stake in Alibaba.
