Missing EMV liability shift date NBD, IT execs say

In a recent survey, 42 percent of IT pros said their company was making no apparent progress on EMV; 58 percent didn't think missing the deadline would affect the bottom line.

In a new study by Randstad Technologies, 42 percent of respondents surveyed — representing a cross-section of industries — have either taken no steps toward transition to EMV in the U.S., or are unaware of any progress being made at their company.

A majority of respondents (58 percent) also said that missing the liability shift deadline will have little or no impact on their company's bottom line, according to a press release about the study.

"I'm surprised there's such a disconnect between companies' seriousness about the EMV transition and their actions to make it happen," said Dick Mitchell, Randstad technologies solutions director.

Participants in the survey cited lack of time and access to technical deployment expertise as the biggest obstacles to meeting the liability shift deadline. More than half (55 percent) said the Oct. 1 liability shift deadline should be delayed.

Randstad Technologies surveyed 84 IT decision-makers at businesses with 100 or more sites. Respondents included C-level and director-level staff from industries affected by the deadline, including financial services, hospitality, restaurants and retail. The survey was conducted May 13–June 19.
