Merchant consortium IMPACTorg partners with Zipmark, offers B2B mobile payment program

One of the drivers underlying the push towards mobile payments is merchants' desire to avoid the fees associated with accepting credit cards. One group organizing its mobile commerce efforts around that goal is IMPACTorg, a consortium of more than 30,000 small and medium-sized independent businesses. The group has announced that it is launching a new B2B mobile enabled payments program.

Considering that IMPACTorg's partners have accepted more than $1 billion in check or card payments and paid an average cost of 2.5 percent, the group said its new program, which charges no fees, could eliminate more than $25 million in fees and charges.

IMPACTorg also announced that it has selected Zipmark's secure digital payment service to enhance its card and mobile payments initiative. The group said Zipmark will streamline the reloading of cardholders' IMPACTorg mobile wallets using a secure digital check from Zipmark. (Read more about Zipmark's check-based payment network.)

"The overall payment ecosystem must be disrupted to create comprehensive change," said IMACTorg CEO Sean Kumar said. "Small retailers even pay for bad payment products. There is something not right here and definitely not right for merchants or their customers."

Zipmark CEO Jay Bhattacharya said his company is excited to be working with an organization like IMPACTorg. "Customers of IMPACTorg constantly need to reload their loyalty card, and Zipmark provides a seamless avenue to quickly and securely transfer money from any bank account to their IMPACTorg card," he said.

Through Zipmark's payment gateway, users can link their bank accounts directly to their IMPACTorg mobile wallet and then pay using their mobile phone at participating merchants.

In announcing the new B2B product, Kumar also mentioned the efforts of MCX, another collective looking to use mobile as a disruptor of the current payment paradigm.

"IMPACTorg or MCX really should not be seen as champions of interchange free payments, but as champions of comprehensive reforms," Kumar said.
