LevelUp, Chartwells pilot mobile payments at college campuses

Mobile payment startup LevelUp has taken the next step in its strategy of world domination: Go after America's impressionable youth.

The company is partnering with Chartwells Higher Education Dining Services, a provider of food services to colleges nationwide, on a pilot to offer LevelUp as a payment method at dining halls at two colleges, Northeastern University in Boston and Buffalo State in New York.

Chartwells said it piloted LevelUp at the two schools to make mealtime ordering quicker and more convenient. "Chartwells chose to pilot the new payment system at Buffalo State and Northeastern because we thought it was a perfect fit for our partners," said Patti Girardi, Chartwells vice president of marketing and creative services.

"What's great for Chartwells is that LevelUp can provide analytics about meal purchases, site visits and return visits. This information can be used to gauge which promotions or limited time offers were popular among students and any sales fluctuations at retail locations based on student purchasing behaviors."

The LevelUp app works the same way at college dining halls as it does at other merchants. College students link a payment card to a personal QR code rendered on the app. A scanner at the point of sale scans the code and registers the payment.
