Japanese messaging app plans to take payments service global

Users will be able link a payment card to the Line Pay mobile app and then use the account to purchase items online or in storefronts at participating merchants.

Line, a Japan-based messaging service, plans to take its mobile payments service outside the country for the first time, according to local media reports.

The company said users will be able link a payment card to the Line Pay mobile app and then use the account to purchase items online or in storefronts at participating merchants. The app also features what's called a "Dutch Pay" function which enables two users to pay together for one item. Users can also make funds transfers with the app.

Line also has other products in Japan it could make available outside the country. Line Wow is a restuarant delivery service similar to Square Order in the U.S. Line Taxi is like Uber and users can use Line Pay to pay for rides in Tokyo.
