Iowa preps digital driver's license pilot

Smartphone app would not only store identification but also send motorists push notifications with traffic alerts.

The final piece missing from a true mobile wallet experience has always been a digital driver's license. One state now plans to pilot such a program.

The Iowa Department of Transportation said it plans to pilot a smartphone app that not only stores a digital version of a driver's license, but also sends motorists push notifications for traffic alerts or when the license is about to expire, according to the Washington Post

The department will test the app in the next six months with a number of state employees who frequently travel for work. Mark Lowe, director of the Iowa Department of Transportation Motor Vehicles Division, said the state will then determine the best way to expand the program to other motorists. He wants to at least give people the option to use the app while they wait for the physical version to arrive in the mail.
