DirectAuto Insurance has rolled out new mobile capabilities, including a pay-by-text feature and an app that evaluates driving habits.

Customers with a mobile phone and bank account who choose to pay monthly premiums by SMS can text their payment up to three days after the due date without penalty, and the company will send a text reminder before bills are due.

"Approximately 56 percent of American adults own a smartphone, including many of our customers," John Mullen, the company's president and CEO, said in a news release. "As we continue to seek more convenient ways for our customers to make payments and lower their rates, one of the best solutions was to bring these options directly to our customers through their phones."

The company's DirectDrive app for iOS and Android devices lets users monitor and track good driving habits, with the promise of discounted rates.
