Deutsche Telekom inks carrier billing agreement with mopay

Munich-based mopay, a provider of cellphone and landline account billing solutions for online merchants, has announced a carrier billing partnership with Deutsche Telekom.

The agreement will allow mopay to connect directly to Deutsche Telekom's international payment hub, the Service Delivery Platform.

"Granting mopay direct access to the Deutsche Telekom global billing infrastructure reflects mopay's trusted status, and is the latest in a series of agreements with global carrier groups such as Telefonica, Telenor and SingTel," mopay CEO Ingo Lippert said in a statement.

The company will provide the front end of the joint service, integrating digital merchants into the mopay platform and enabling them to offer carrier billing as a payment option at checkout. Deutsche Telekom will provide back-end billing capabilities, giving its 142 million mobile customers in 14 markets access to mopay payments.

Mobile subscribers don't need to register with mopay in order to use mopay's payment platform, the company said. Instead, they opt to pay by mopay at checkout and provide their cellphone number. They then receive a PIN on their cellphone which they enter online to make a purchase. Finally, the purchase value is added to their cellphone bill.

Juniper Research predicts that global revenues from mobile content purchased via carrier billing will increase three-fold to more than $13 billion in 2017.
