CommBank adds HCE-based NFC payments

Any Android phone with NFC and running KitKat 4.4 and above can make tap-and-go payments at contactless-enabled POS terminals.

Commonwealth Bank of Australia this past week updated its mobile banking app and added the ability for its customers to make mobile payments using any Android phone with NFC and running KitKat 4.4 and above, according to multiple media reports.

Of course, the bank is using Host Card Emulation technology to make tap-and-go payments possible for Android users. Before HCE, customers needed to purchase a physical PayTag (contactless sticker) to make mobile payments and link it to the app.

Commonwealth Bank relaunched its mobile banking app in late 2013 and told several Australia-based media outlets it has some 3.2 million registered users who have made $100 billion in transactions in the past 12 months.
