Citibank brings MasterPass to India
The bank and MasterCard claim that the digital wallet, which is accepted worldwide at 250,000 online retailers as a checkout option, is the first of its kind available in India.
MasterCard continues to expand the availability of its MasterPass digital wallet overseas; the company on Wednesday announced a partnership with Citibank India to bring the service to the bank's credit and debit card holders, according to multiple reports.
Both companies claim that the digital wallet, which is accepted worldwide at 250,000 online retailers as a checkout option, is the first of its kind available in India. The country is the first in the Asia-Pacific region where MasterPass is available, according to media reports.
EBay India, Bookmyshow and BillDesk are among some of the first Indian online retailers to feature MasterPass checkout. Overall, some 100 online Indian businesses will accept it.
"Over the last two years, we have seen an increase of over 76 percent in e-commerce transactions by our customers," Kartik Kaushik, head of consumer banking for Citibank India, said in a statement. "These customers are constantly looking for simple, quick and secure experiences while shopping online."
