Barclays launches alternative to Android Pay
Barclays is not waiting for Android Pay to launch in the U.K. and has introduced its own alternative, Barclays Contactless Mobile.
The service is similar to Android Pay in that Barclays customers register their credit and debit cards using the bank's Android app. They can then make mobile payments with NFC-enabled phones at stores with contactless terminals.
Barclays said in an announcement that Barclays Contactless Mobile will work at approximately 400,000 locations in the U.K., including London's transportation network.
Barclays has resisted participation with third-party mobile wallets, but it caved to Apple Pay when customers began to complain. Barclays has said it has no plans to support Android Pay at launch.
