Australian grocery chain begins small scale mobile payment test

Austrailian supermarket chain Coles is testing a mobile payment and loyalty solution. It's a small test, involving only 60 people, and the company is hedging on whether or not the effort points towards a larger rollout any time soon. It did say it will be expanding the test in the next three months.

According to a story in the Australian Financial Review, Coles is testing the MasterCard Mobile Wallet and additional terminals supporting MasterCard's PayPass contactless technology will be installed by the end of the month.

"We'll continue trialing the system over the next three months ... and I must say we've been heartened by the results so far," said Richard Wormald, Coles' general manager of financial services, in the article

Wormald said it's possible Coles may start a larger rollout within the next 12 months, but that decision would need careful consideration.

Owned by Wesfarmers, one of Australia's largest retailers, Coles has more than 700 stores across Australia.
