AmEx gets PayPal-like with Express Checkout

AmEx Express Checkout enables AmEx cardholders to check out quickly at participating online merchants by using their americanexpress.com account login.

American Express today announced the launch of AmEx Express Checkout, which will enable AmEx cardholders to check out quickly at participating online merchants by using their americanexpress.com account login, according to a press release.

With AmEx Express Checkout, cardholders use their existing americanexpress.com user ID and Password, and American Express autofills the checkout fields with their card details and relevant account information in just a few clicks. AmEx said the new service is not considered an online wallet such as Visa Checkout and MasterPass. AmEx Express Checkout does not require a cardholder to create or manage a new account.

BarkBox, Burberry, Ledbury, Newegg, Sabon, Ticketmaster, Warby Parker and The Wall Street Journal are the first merchants to accept AmEx Express Checkout. American Express and Stripe are working together to enable merchants using Stripe as a payments platform to enable AmEx Express Checkout for their customers via an API. AmEx Express Checkout is expected to be available in the coming months on websites for Avis Car Rental, Banana Republic, Cole Haan, Hulu, Gap, Intermix, Old Navy, Popsugar Must Have, Rocketmiles, 1-800-Flowers.com and others, according to the announcement.

"We know our card members and merchants want a simple, fast checkout process to make online shopping easy and delightful," said Leslie Berland, executive vice president of digital partnerships and development at American Express. "AmEx Express Checkout leverages our unique technology to create a checkout experience unlike any other, one that is valuable to merchants and secure for card members, giving them peace of mind."
