Amazon's mobile wallet finds a quick end after only 6 months

The company Tuesday sent Amazon Wallet users an email that said the beta program for the mobile wallet had concluded and that the app would no longer be available for new downloads.

Amazon Wallet first appeared on the Amazon Appstore and Google Play in mid-July to little fanfare and no one noticed it until some Android blogs spotted it the following week. Six months later, Amazon's bare bones effort at a mobile wallet is no more.

The company Tuesday sent Amazon Wallet users an email that said the beta program for the mobile wallet had concluded and the app would no longer be available for new downloads.

"We have learned a great deal from the introduction of the Wallet and will look for ways to apply these lessons in the future as we continue to innovate on behalf of you, our customers," Amazon wrote in the email.

Amazon Wallet didn't do much outside of acting as a digital storage space for plastic gift and loyalty cards. Users could either scan or type in the card's number to transfer information to the app. Amazon then converted the information into a digital format, which could be a barcode, QR code, text or image.

Amazon told Wallet users they would still be able to use any gift, loyalty or membership cards stored in the app. Gift card balances, however, would no longer update in the app.
