Ally Bank adds Popmoney to mobile banking app

Ally Bank has expanded its mobile banking app to allow smartphone users to send and receive money through Fiserv's Popmoney. The bank also announced it will allow recurring electronic fund transfers between Ally and non-Ally accounts.

Ally has offered Popmoney since 2011, but the mobile app lets users view scheduled payments and payment history and set up and manage contacts. Users send funds by providing the recipient's email address, mobile phone number or bank account information. Recipients then receive an SMS message or email letting them know the money has been sent, with instructions on how to deposit it online. If the sender provides a bank account, the money goes directly into the recipient's account.

Ally charges no fee for Popmoney transactions. The service previously limited money transfers to only Ally accounts.

The Ally mobile banking app, which received an award from Forrester this summer, also allows electronic check deposit, bill pay and an ATM and cash-back locator.
