Dunkin' Donuts is adding capabilities to its mobile payment application, the company has announced. Mobile users can now receive offers via their phones for special discounts and promotions on Dunkin' Donuts food and beverages.
Customers will receive offers through a new "My Offers" tab on their application. The exclusive mobile offers will be directed to users based on geo-targeting capabilities. The regional offers will be redeemable at certain participating local Dunkin' Donuts restaurants beginning immediately, with others set to launch through early 2013, the company said.
"Our busy guests are always on the go, and we know they are increasingly reliant on their mobile devices," said John Costello, Dunkin' Brands Chief Global Marketing and Innovation Officer. "Delivering special discounts and promotional offers directly to their mobile devices highlights our unique value proposition and deepens the connection we have with people who make Dunkin' Donuts part of their daily lives.
Using the Dunkin' Donuts app to receive discounts is as simple as finding an offer in the new "My Offers" section of the app, selecting the discount and having the barcode for the offer scanned at the time of purchase. Deals will include offers such as discounts on hot chocolate or buy-one-get-one-free coffee.
The Dunkin' Donuts app, launched earlier this year, is similar to coffee retailer Starbucks' mobile payment app. It uses a barcode scanned at the register to deduct money from a prepaid account, which users can reload through a linked payment account. The Dunkin' Donuts app also lets users send virtual gift cards to friends and family.
The mobile payment app from Starbucks continues to be the gold standard for mobile payments at this point. In a call with analysts last week, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz said the app has been used more than 100 million times since its launch in January 2011.
