POS-maker VeriFone Systems Inc. and Fujitsu are partnering on a comprehensive solution that will untether associates from the traditional cash register. The mobile retail solution is powered by GlobalBay, the software provider VeriFone acquired last year. The new solution can be integrated into Fujitu's GlobalSTORE or used with a standalone device such as a tablet or smartphone.
"This partnership brings together best-of-breed mobile and POS technologies to support retailers' needs in a complex and rapidly evolving world," said Sandeep Bhanote, VP and GM for Mobile Retailing Solutions at VeriFone, in a statement.
The new co-branded solution gives Fujitsu retail customers a sophisticated mobile POS that lets them serve their consumers from anywhere in the store, and that supports any number of mobile payment acceptance types via digital wallets or alternative payments.
"Mobile is a rapidly changing world for retailers, and the VeriFone GlobalBay offering was the clear choice to keep us ahead of the curve," said Brian Yates, director of Retail Product Marketing for Fujitsu America.
"Fujitsu's integrated solutions provide the ability for VeriFone to leverage the same pricing, promotions and business logic capabilities as a retailer's traditional GlobalSTORE point-of-sale terminals, from mobile devices," Yates said.
Bhanote, in a call with Mobile Payments Today, said the solution, which currently only supports mobile devices running iOS, provides retailers more than just a mobile POS. Larger retailers, Bhanote said, can't just add new devices into their point of sale process; they have to think about integrating back-office systems before adding tablets or smartphones. Through the new Fujitsu/GlobalBay partnership, retailers have a solution that can handle these integrations, including their own particular business rules and logic.
GlobalBay focused on larger retailers who have legacy POS systems, Bhanote said. "We worked to extend those systems," Bhanote said.
The new point-of-sale solution extends to other channels and stores, as well. Store associates can handles tasks such as checking stock at other locations or can even place orders through a store's online channel. The solution is going beyond a scan and swipe to being able to deliver an omnichannel experience, Bhanote said.
