It's been a big week on the mobile remote cash access scene, with big players in both the ATM manufacturing and banking sectors rolling out their new mobile/ATM integrations.
First, NCR announced its Mobile Cash Withdrawal solution, technology that lets consumers set up a cardless ATM withdrawal with their smartphone. Then, hot on the heels of that unveiling, the Royal Bank of Scotland debuted its own mobile app enabling ATM users to score up to £100 ($155) in cash cardlessly.
According to a BBC report, the system is an extension to an existing RBS service that was originally designed to allow customers whose ATM card was stolen to obtain emergency funds from an ATM.
To use the new mobile service, customers must download the bank's mobile app, which is free. So far, 2.6 million customers have installed the app on their phones, according to the report.
To request cash, the user opens the password-protected app and taps the screen to reveal a six-digit, single-use password to be entered at the ATM. The code is valid for a limited period of time at any one of 8,000 RBS-, NatWest- or Tesco-branded ATMs in the U.K.
"It is a really simple and secure way to help our customers get cash whenever and wherever they need it," Ben Green, head of mobile at RBS and NatWest, told the BBC.
